It’s a downloadable first-person shooter set in the Batman universe, but it doesn’t feature the Dark Knight who, of course, is a hero who doesn’t believe in guns. I’ve spent a few days with Gotham City Impostors, and while I enjoy the game, I don’t know why it exists. Who was asking for this mash-up? Gotham City Impostors is a functional shooter with a sense of humor and a Batman license. It’s got plenty to unlock, but it’s not all that deep. Go, shoot, win. Over and over. If you’re looking for a first-person shooter that doesn’t take itself seriously, have at it, but don’t expect a FPS revolution. Gotham City Impostors. A Batman first-person shooter.

More so than any of Batman’s various forms over the ages, Gotham City Impostors seems to harbour most of its influences from the Adam West era, with slapstick noises, goofy humour and corny dialogue taken straight out of the s. I’m actually surprised “Pow” and “Thwack” aren’t plastered over the screen when you hit somebody, though with the way Monolith and Warner Bros have assembled their goofy creation I imagine there’s already plans to flog that down the line as premium DLC.
Sold for a skimpy Microsoft Points, Gotham City Impostors’ initial charge is clearly intended to be your first of many. But can an unpalatable focus on shaking its players until money falls out be enough to completely cripple a six-versus-six online shooter? The answer it’s yes, by the way won’t surprise you. The core idea behind Gotham City Impostors is wonderful, and there’s plenty here that tickles my fancy, but it’s hard to get behind a game that seems to be designed with such utter contempt for its players.
The biggest problem is that this is an online FPS designed around the traditional breadcrumb trail of swag and unlocks, but it’s a far too miserly when it comes to doling out XP. Gotham City Impostors denies you nothing provided you’ve got unlock points to spend, but earning these tokens – you get ones to unlock new gear, customise your weapons, buy perks and so on – is entirely dependent on what the game dishes out as you level up, and if you blow your precious points on something you don’t really like there is no try-before-you-buy, and certainly no refunds it can be an extremely long and painful wait until you’re awarded another chance.
Please, sir, I want some more. A sense of being a bit too stingy is a problem the game never manages to recover from. And that’s a real shame, because there’s also a lot of joy to be found in Gotham City Impostors. I particularly like the game’s unique take on lateral movement, forcing you to look at the skies is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a profanity-spewing teenager with a heavy bodyset dive bombing you!
Wot I Think: Gotham City Impostors
A free-to-play version of Gotham City Impostors apparently launched very quietly on Steam yesterday. What’s curious is there seems to be zero official word from Monolith or publisher Warner Bros. Interactive on the matter.
Read what our users had to say about Gotham City Impostors for PC at Matchmaking is now good without boring waiting and new stuffs are cool. It takes too long to get to a game for me to have to restart the whole process.
Okay, who saw Gotham City Impostors coming? Batman and apparently Joker as well, have both left Gotham City leaving it in the hands of its citizens. The citizens however, seem to be a bit loopy after surviving a few decades of idolizing a man dressed like a bat and demonizing a clown. The entire concept is pretty bonkers. But then again, a game with a creative concept or good art has never been an indicator of perfection or even overall quality. Despite the charm and kookiness, can the game hold up under the harsh, cold, critical spotlight?
The game is simply not content with letting you play an average, serious shooter; instead it creates a tone very rarely seen in online shooters, omitting one extremely popular, memetic, cartoonish, cult classic entry into the genre. The art direction seeps its way even into the mechanics. For instance, the balancing point of the Defender being a gigantic, thick-necked gunner who is able to withstand more fire than other characters, but his cartoonishly massive body size makes him an easier target to pump rounds into.
This game acts as a perfect antithesis, and possible deconstruction of, the average online shooter mindset. Or has the game read you a little too perfectly?

Local H Jay Registered User regular. February Local, I am on right now if you wanna rump. I am dl the update right now.
Known for the No One Lives Forever, F.E.A.R., and Condemned series, Gotham City Impostors seemingly is a game that has not been properly you in a matchmaking lobby, but Gotham City Impostors gives no indication that Gotham City Impostors takes inspiration from Call of Duty and Team Fortress.
You spin around and aim your weapon upwards, trying to catch a glimpse of the menace Spotting a nearby trampoline and bouncing off of it far into the air, you pull out a grappling hook at the apex and shoot it towards a distant building. Zooming across the sky you spot your prey, running along a nearby roof, and you disengage your hook and drop down behind him. You pull a jack-in-the-box out of your pocket and throw it at him, cackling madly as it explodes in a direct hit and the screen tells you how many experience points you just earned from his death.
First note the title, however- you’re not playing Batman, the Joker, or anyone sanctioned by either character. Or something. Cause really, story? Not that you ever need an excuse for that. The combat is insanely fast and fun and actually feels quite different than most shooters, not only because of the thematic weaponry. Besides the many standard weapons you are given – everything from pistols to rocket launchers – you can equip gadgets to maneuver around the maps with ease.
All of this along with the many features scattered around the world like ramps, trampolines, etc. The matches are great but variety may be an issue for some, as there are a mere five maps and three multiplayer modes to compete in. The maps use familiar locations like the Ace Chemical Plant, Gotham Electric and such, but they feel fairly similar since they have wide-open expanses to take advantage of all those wonderful toys.
Is the matchmaking really bad…
Skip to Content. Based on DC Comics characters, this cartoon shooter is a tale of good versus evil. But combat is the name of the game — with lots of weapons, explosives, and other gadgets used to destroy the other team –so it doesn’t have a very positive message. Plus, gamers can play as the good guys or the bad guys. One team has people dressed as Batman, who is a positive role model for the most part, but the other team has people dressed as the malevolent The Joker.
Gotham City Impostors. That doesn’t take ages in my case, so I start to install the game. This is caused by the laggy matchmaking system.

You can, for example, soar in the air and then launch yourself at a person to damage or kill them. I bought it yesterday and am enjoying it. I do not have any experience with TF2, but have played lots of Call of Duty and Bioshock 2 to compare. I really enjoy the emphasis on using height, with all of the different toys you can use to obtain it, from the glider allowing you to soar ahead and dive on your opponents, to spring shoes allowing you to jump or double jump from about anywhere.
The weapons and most of the upgrades are fairly run-of-the-mill with a few nice twists in there, like my gun mod that points out nearby enemies via smell stink clouds appear where they are, even if they are behind corners. One of the big strikes against the game right now is the lack of variety of game play.

With Batman gone or otherwise out of commission, who will rise up to defend Gotham City from the forces of chaos? How about a ragtag group of wannabe bat men and women? R and Condemned franchises. Does the Batman license lend itself well to the FPS genre? Have the developers at Monolith provided a decent FPS experience at an affordable price? And will Gotham fall into chaos or become a shining beacon of order? Read on to find out. Batman is typically a very serious guy who demands serious games about serious things.
Chances are Batman himself would hate Gotham City Impostors GCI due to the fact that this game is the furthest thing from serious; but just because Bats is so serious, doesn’t mean the rest of us are. GCI takes more pages out of the book of Team Fortress 2 than it does out of any of the dark and broody Batman source material, and that’s okay. This silly FPS features tonnes of gadgets, a veritable cornucopia of weapons, and five default classes to knock some sense into those deranged clowns.
You can also unlock custom classes which allow you to dole out your own specialized brand of justice or chaos, depending on which side of the 6-vs-6 action you are on. Guns are more affordable than fists?
